Product Placement Leaps off the Page

Don't get me wrong, we're all for hypertext linking in this blog and I can still remember Brooks Brothers being mentioned in Bret Easton Ellis' American Pyscho in 1991. But with Cathy's Book (a novel aimed at adolescents), authors Sean Stewart and Jordan Weisman had already written it when Mr. Weisman of Creative Artists Agency showed the manuscript to Maurice Coffey, a marketing manager at Procter & Gamble.

Turns out, Lipslicks a brand in the book is a line of lip gloss made by Cover Girl, which has signed an unusual marketing partnership with Running Press, the unit of Perseus Books Group that is publishing the novel. P&G will promote the book on Beinggirl, a Web site directed at adolescent girls that has games, advice on handling puberty and, yes, makeup tips.
